Cannabis Regulators Ready for Next Phase of Legalization

"Build the plane while we're flying it"

Paragraph 1

A year after it became legal for adults 21 and up to use, possess, and grow their own cannabis in Minnesota, regulators are preparing for the next phase of legalization. The state's Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) is reviewing applications for the first applicants set to stand up recreational marijuana businesses in the state.

Paragraph 2

OCM employees have likened their work implementing the new law to "building the plane while we're flying it." The agency has been working to develop rules and regulations for the industry, while also fielding a high volume of inquiries from potential applicants. Despite the challenges, OCM Director Jeff Hemphill said he is confident that the state will be able to successfully implement the new law.

Paragraph 3

The next phase of legalization is expected to create a significant economic impact in Minnesota. The state projects that the recreational marijuana industry will generate $1.5 billion in sales in the first year, and create thousands of jobs.
